When you use GetRedGifs — whether you paste a URL or search by username — you're presented with four download options: HD, SD, Silent, and Image. Choosing the right one depends on how you plan to use the file.
1. HD (High Definition)
Best for: Desktop viewing, editing, and permanent archiving.
The HD option downloads the original video file uploaded to RedGIFs. This is the highest quality available.
- Resolution: Typically 720p or 1080p, sometimes higher.
- Audio: Includes sound if the original upload had it.
- File Size: Largest file size (can be 5MB to 50MB+).
- Format: Usually MP4.
Note: Even though the platform is called RedGIFs, modern "GIFs" are actually high-efficiency MP4 videos. True .gif files are rarely used anymore because they are huge and have no sound.
2. SD (Standard Definition)
Best for: Mobile phones, slow internet connections, or quick sharing on apps with file size limits (like Discord or WhatsApp).
SD is a compressed version of the original video.
- Resolution: Lower than HD (often roughly 360p or 480p).
- Audio: Includes sound.
- File Size: significantly smaller than HD.
- Format: MP4.
3. Silent
Best for: Creating reaction GIFs, using as background video, or if you simply don't want the sound.
This is the video track stripped of any audio data.
- Resolution: Same as HD (usually).
- Audio: None.
- File Size: Slightly smaller than HD.
4. Image (For Image Uploads Only)
Best for: Saving photos and pictures that were uploaded to RedGIFs as images rather than videos.
Not all content on RedGIFs is a video — some creators upload still images (photos, artwork, etc.). When you load one of these in GetRedGifs, you'll see an Image download option instead of HD/SD/Silent.
- Resolution: The original image resolution as uploaded by the creator.
- File Size: Varies — typically 50KB to a few MB depending on the image.
- Format: JPG, PNG, or WebP depending on the original upload.
Note: This option only appears for image uploads. Videos always offer HD, SD, and Silent — there is no "Image" quality tier for video content.
Which one should I choose?
Always choose HD if you have the storage space. You can always compress a video later, but you can never improve the quality of a low-resolution file.
If you're on a limited mobile data plan, SD is your friend. It loads much faster and uses a fraction of the data.
If you're bulk-downloading from a creator's profile via username search, SD is also a smart default — a 100-video batch in HD could be 1–3 GB, whereas SD keeps it under 800 MB.
What about .GIF format?
You might notice we don't offer a "Download as .GIF" button. This is intentional. Converting these videos to the ancient .GIF format would increase the file size by 10x and reduce the color quality to 256 colors. MP4 is superior in every way. If you absolutely need a .gif file, we recommend downloading the HD video and using a dedicated converter tool.
